Arkazi Holy Cross Monastery. A well-known pilgrimage destination, Arkazi Holy Cross Monastery lies seven kilometres east of Vernashen in Vayots Dzor Province, in a scenic river valley near the village of Arkaz. The monastery preserves a sacred relic said to be a fragment of the True Cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified. First mentioned in the 8th century, it is one of the region’s oldest monastic sites. The present church was completely rebuilt in 1870–1871 while retaining the site’s ancient spiritual significance.
