Douglas Column

The Howard Douglas Obelisk was erected in 1843 in honor of the prominent English consul Howard Douglas, who actively participated in the city's development. He oversaw the construction of roads, a university, a psychiatric hospital, a prison, and other public facilities. The obelisk is located at the intersection of the coastal Democracy Avenue and Alexander Avenue, as well as two other local roads, at the beginning of Garitsa Park. This monument serves not only as a city landmark but also as a meeting place for locals, symbolizing the importance and significance of Howard Douglas's contribution to the community's development.
