Monastery of Saint Euphemia

One of the oldest monasteries on the island of Corfu was founded in the 15th century. At a time when the island was under the rule of the Venetian Empire, Orthodox churches were not recognized as conquered, and monasteries were forced to register them as their property. The Mosulis family was known as the owner of this monastery for many years. Before the construction of the current catholicon, there was an older church on the monastery grounds where the icon of Saint Euphemia was discovered. According to legend, two priests and their wives, who became nuns after the death of their husbands, are mentioned as the last owners of the monastery. According to tradition, the discovery of the icon of Saint Euphemia was a miracle, as the saint appeared in a dream to one of the nuns and showed her the place where the icon was located.
