Saint John the Baptist Church. The Church of Saint John the Baptist in Mastara was built in the 5th century and is one of Armenia’s oldest churches. Located in the historical region of Ayrarat, it is distinguished by sharply defined corners and apses projecting on all sides. Several ancient khachkars around the church complement its architecture. The building is an important example of the transition from simple plans to more complex Armenian church compositions, comparable to Saint Hripsime Church in Etchmiadzin.
