Shemakha Gate

The twin fortress gates, also known as Shemakha Gates, are an important historical monument in Baku. They were named in honor of the ancient caravan route from Shemakha, which passed through them. Located at the intersection of Boyuk Gala and Kichik Gala streets inside Icherisheher, and Aziz Aliyev and Istiglaliyyat streets outside, these gates were built in different periods. The old gates were built in the 12th century by order of Manuchehr III the Great, and the new ones in the 17th century by order of Zulfugar Khan under Shah Abbas I. These gates are not only a symbol of history but also an important element of Baku's architectural heritage.
