Shuamta Monastery

Old Shuamta (ძველი შუამთა) is an ancient Georgian Orthodox monastery located in the picturesque Kakheti region. It is situated at an altitude of about 1015 meters above sea level, surrounded by a dense forest, just five kilometers west of Telavi, Georgia. The name "Shuamta" translates to "between the mountains," indicating a secluded location amidst the beautiful Gombori forests where the buildings of the old Shuamta monastery are located. The monastery complex includes a 5th-century basilica and two domed churches built in the 7th century. The largest domed church resembles the Jvari Monastery in its style and architecture.
