Alahan Monastery

Alahan, also called Alabanda, stands on the southern slopes of the Taurus Mountains as a silent witness to early Christian history. Founded in the fourth century, it was built in two major phases, first under Leo I and later under Zeno, evolving from a rock-cut monastery into a complex of churches, a baptistery, cells and terraces. The western basilica impresses with its scale, the eastern church with its tower, and the two-aisled baptistery preserves a cross-shaped pool. Reliefs on the portal of the three-aisled basilica depict Christ, archangels and Ezekiel’s vision. Monks and pilgrims came here until the seventh century, after which Alahan fell into centuries of silence.

The history of Alahan is intertwined with scholarly debate. One English priest identified it as the Byzantine monastery of Apadna, supposedly restored under Justinian, but researcher Michael Gough rejected this theory because there was no evidence of such restoration. It is known that early Christians sought refuge here from persecution and adapted the caves for prayer.
