Ancient City of Korykos

The ancient city, located in the Aydıncık district of modern Mersin, was first discovered during excavations in 1987. According to legends, the city was founded by Sandon, one of the ancient gods of Cilicia. Initially, the city was inhabited by the Luwians. Due to its location on the sea route between the east and west of the Mediterranean Sea, as well as near the island of Cyprus, the city had one of the most convenient ports in the region. Because of this strategic position, in the 10th century BC, the city was renamed to its current name.
