Church of the Holy Archangels

The Gremi Cathedral, also known as the Church of the Holy Archangels, is a Georgian Orthodox cathedral built in 1565 by King Levan of Kakheti. This cathedral is located in the village of Gremi, in the Kvareli municipality, Kakheti region, on an elevation west of the village. The fresco in the cathedral dates back to 1577. The cathedral is built of brick and has three entrance doors on the west, south, and north walls. The Gremi Cathedral also served as a castle, having its own wall. This wall was later repaired by Erekle II. Before the construction of the cathedral, there was a tower on the elevation, which still stands as a free-standing bell tower next to the church.
