Geguti Palace

Geguti Palace is a historical monument that was built in the 11th century and is an important archaeological site. It is located a few kilometers from the modern borders of Kutaisi, near the Rioni railway station. Initially, a 4th-century fortress was located on this site, and then during the reign of George III, the main part of the palace was built, around 1156. At different times, the palace was the residence of Queen Tamar and the place where, in 1190, supporters of Prince Yuri Andreyevich proclaimed him king during political struggles. However, in the early 19th century, the palace was destroyed and is currently in ruins.
