Gelendzhik Embankment curves around the bay from Cape Tonky to Cape Tolsty for about fourteen kilometres, eight of them pedestrianised. Its history began in 1901 when summer residents organised coastal improvements, laid out boulevards and installed wooden paths and benches. Today it follows a unified design of patterned grey and burgundy paving, white balustrades, lighting and stone sea defences. The central section runs from Golden Bay Aquapark to Sadovaya Street; the southern section reaches Cape Tolsty, a wild beach and working lighthouse; and the northern section reaches Cape Tonky with sandy and pebble beaches beneath Pitsunda pines. Landmarks include the white leading lighthouse of 1897, the Lovers’ Hearts fountain, the bronze Lighthouse Keeper with his lamp and dog, and military and naval memorials. Amusement rides, boat excursions and cable-car access to the Markotkh Ridge add to the promenade’s attractions.

A legend tells of a kind and beautiful girl given a magic ring with instructions to make a wish and throw it into the sea. People called her Gelen Dzhik, the “White Bride.” When illness struck her village, she followed the instructions, cast the ring into the waves and the people recovered. The story says Gelendzhik’s healing climate and waters preserve the memory of her kindness.
