Noravank is a medieval monastic complex dating from the 13th–14th centuries, built on a narrow rocky ledge in the Arpa River Gorge in southern Armenia. Its name means New Monastery. The foundation dates to 1205 and is associated with Bishop Hovhannes, formerly head of Vahanavank Monastery.

In the 13th and 14th centuries, Noravank served as the seat of the bishops of historic Syunik and played a prominent role in Armenia's religious and cultural life. It was a center of theology and art supported by the Orbelian princely family. Outstanding masters contributed to its construction and decoration, including the architect Siranes and the celebrated sculptor and architect Momik.

The ensemble includes Surb Karapet Church, the two-story Surb Astvatsatsin Church, and the Chapel of Surb Grigor, which served as the Orbelian family tomb. A particularly rare feature in Armenian iconography is the relief of God the Father preserved above one of the church entrances.

Tradition says the monastery once preserved a fragment of the True Cross. Noravank stands on the site of ancient pagan sanctuaries, and fortress walls were added around the complex in the 17th and 18th centuries. The monastery is striking for the contrast between the severe gorge and its delicate stone carving. It remains a symbol of Armenian faith and culture, attracting visitors for its architecture and dramatic mountain setting.
