Tower of the Balkarukov Princes

Malkaruk-Kala, the tower of the Balkarukov princes, stands in the centre of Eltyubyu on the left bank of the Chegem River. About fifteen metres high and roughly three centuries old, it was built around the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries as a seat of power for the family that controlled the Chegem Gorge. Tradition says invited Svan craftsmen constructed it, explaining architectural features associated with Upper Svaneti. Machicolations, arched loopholes and an entrance raised above ground all reflect its defensive purpose. The interior is filled with stone, and the tower is protected as a federal monument.

The tower is also called the Tower of Love. According to legend, Prince Akhtugan Balkarukov abducted Kerime, a woman from a noble Kumyk family, in the 17th century. Her relatives repeatedly attacked to recover her, but the stone tower provided a secure refuge. The defensive structure thus became a symbol of a daring love that had to be protected with weapons and high walls.
