White Desert

The White Desert, or Sahara el Beyda, is an extraordinary part of Egypt where wind has sculpted chalk formations into fantastical shapes over centuries. Some rocks resemble mushrooms, others animals or mythical creatures, and at sunset the entire landscape turns gold and pink. Across roughly 300 km² between the Bahariya and Farafra oases are small green pockets of palms, acacias, and tamarisks supplied by springs such as Ain Khadra, Ain El-Serw, and Ain El-Maqfi. The White Desert protects rare wildlife including Dorcas gazelles, Barbary sheep, sand cats, and fennec foxes. Snakes and scorpions are said to be uncommon, while the absence of light pollution makes the night sky ideal for stargazing. The area has been a national park since 2002.

The White Desert preserves traces of a remote past: millions of years ago, the area lay beneath the sea, leaving limestone deposits formed from coral, ammonites, and shells. Bedouins call it Wadi Gazar, the ‘Valley of Carrots,’ because of the strange rock shapes. The landscape recalls the dry valleys of Antarctica, while Crystal Mountain marks the entrance. Once quarried by local residents, it is now protected. Summer temperatures can exceed 40°C, but the heat does not diminish the spectacle of the wind-carved formations.
