Dendera Temple Complex

The Dendera Temple Complex, 55 km north of Luxor, is considered one of the best-preserved monuments of ancient Egypt. Its principal temple is dedicated to Hathor, and construction began in 54 BC under Ptolemy XII Auletes. The complex includes a birth temple of Isis, a sacred lake used for rituals, a sanatorium for bathing and prophetic dreams, the mammisi of Nectanebo II, Roman structures, and a Christian basilica. The precinct extends for 79 meters and covers about 40,000 m². Its enclosure walls are made of mud brick, while the temples are built of sandstone. Nearby lies the Dendera necropolis, whose origins reach back to the Early Dynastic Period.

At dawn on New Year’s Day, when Sirius made its heliacal rising, its light entered the temple through an opening in the ceiling and enveloped the statue of Isis-Hathor in a mystical glow. Egyptians counted the beginning of the new year from this moment and regarded the day as sacred.
