Achi Monastery

The Monastery of Saint George in Achi is an ancient Georgian Orthodox church located in the picturesque surroundings of the village of Achi in southwestern Georgia. It was built of finely dressed stone in the late 13th or early 14th century and was later rebuilt, reconstructed, and surrounded by a defensive wall. Inside the church, one can see amazing frescoes, some of which date back to the late 13th century and bear resemblance to Byzantine art. Particularly valuable are the depictions of the mythical life of Saint George the Victorious, which are rare iconographic works.
