Almaty Botanical Garden

Almaty Botanical Garden is one of the city’s principal green spaces. Established in 1932 on 108 hectares, it developed into a scientific center and has been protected as an especially valuable natural area since 2006, preventing construction on its grounds. Thousands of plants from around the world grow here, including local and exotic, rare, and unique species. Oak, conifer, and linden avenues alternate with greenhouses and dendrological collections. The garden is not only a place for walks: it hosts tours, workshops, and exhibitions. In June 2025, it marked World Environment Day and Children’s Day with lectures, quizzes, and the presentation of a children’s encyclopedia about nature. It functions simultaneously as a plant museum and a center of learning.

The Almaty Botanical Garden does more than provide scenery. Scientists preserve rare and endangered flora, develop new varieties of roses, lilacs, and even garlic, and select plants adapted to a changing climate. The garden once served as a filming location for Soviet movies, while its avenues continue to attract photographers and newlyweds.
