Fountain Square

Fountain Square emerged in Baku in 1868 and over time transformed from a city parapet into a cozy square in the very center of the capital. Small in size, it became a place where walking routes, history, and city life intersect. It is surrounded by buildings of different eras – from 19th-century architecture to later constructions, including the Nizami Museum, the former Grand Hotel, an old cinema, and a temple. These facades create a calm, almost intimate frame for the square. Water defines the main character of the space: classic round fountains are juxtaposed with modern compositions of metal and glass, turning the square into an open-air gallery. After the 2010 reconstruction, the fountains were updated, greenery increased, and the square itself became brighter and more spacious for walks. Today, Fountain Square is not so much a geographical point as a vibrant urban salon where Baku relaxes, meets, and moves forward.
