Gavazan Column

Gavazan is a unique monument installed at Tatev Monastery in 904–905 opposite the Church of Surp Poghos-Petros and the bishop’s residence. Dedicated to the Holy Trinity, the eight-sided column stands on an octagonal pedestal. Its builders precisely balanced its weight and proportions so that it normally remains vertical. Mounted on a pivot, however, Gavazan can sway, giving rise to its names “swinging column” and “living staff.”
