Greek Orthodox Cemetery

The Greek Orthodox Cemetery in Istanbul, founded in 1859 in the Şişli district, serves as the burial place of members of the Greek community and other Christians. The 21-hectare necropolis contains more than 85,000 graves, as well as the Church of the Transfiguration, built in 1888. Those buried here include historian Nikolai Krasnoseltsev, Archimandrite Seraphim Palayda and Eftim I, the first primate of the Turkish Orthodox Church.

Among the Greek inscriptions in the cemetery, Cyrillic lettering can occasionally be seen, while the graves of Russian deceased bear eight-pointed crosses that stand out against the more traditional symbols.
