Karnak Temple Complex

The Karnak Temple Complex at Karnak on the east bank of the Nile is the largest temple complex of ancient Egypt and the principal sanctuary of the New Kingdom. It is dedicated to the Theban triad—Amun-Ra, his consort Mut, and their son Khonsu—and also contains a temple of Aten built by Akhenaten. The complex developed between the 20th and 1st centuries BC and was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded with new pylons, hypostyle halls, and palaces. Its central Great Hypostyle Hall covers 5,000 m² and is supported by 134 columns rising to about 24 meters, decorated with reliefs and hieroglyphs. The main entrance is aligned so that on the summer solstice, sunlight illuminates the statue of Amun-Ra. An open-air museum on the grounds displays reconstructed royal chapels, including the alabaster shrine of Amenhotep II. Since 1979, Karnak, together with Luxor Temple and the Theban necropolises, has formed part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A legend associated with Karnak Temple reflects the Egyptian creation myth: the creator god emerged from the primordial waters as a mound rising above a lake. The priests and Theban elite are believed to have chosen this site to embody the myth in stone and make the temple a true dwelling place of Amun-Ra.
