Luxor Museum

Luxor Museum stands on the east bank of the Nile beside the great temples, almost as a continuation of their history. It was created so that discoveries from Luxor and Karnak could remain close to the land where they were found. The modern two-story building, designed by Mahmoud El Hakim, opened in 1975, and part of the collection is displayed in an open-air garden. The exhibition spans more than four thousand years, from prehistory to the early Christian and Islamic periods. Visitors can see fragments from Akhenaten’s Aten temple, a monumental head of the pharaoh, statues of Thutmose III, Horemheb, and Amenhotep III, and small but rare wooden figures. The museum feels like a quiet dialogue between ancient Egypt and modern Luxor.

A Luxor legend tells of black cats that appear near the temples at night. They are said not to be ordinary animals but the spirit of an ancient priestess appointed to guard the secrets of the sanctuaries. The cats appear suddenly and vanish without a trace, as though reminding visitors that the past is still alive here.
