Kayanberd Fortress

Kayanberd, originally known as the fortress of Surp Nshan of Haghpat, stands in Armenia’s Lori Province between the villages of Haghpat and Akner. It occupies a high promontory to the right of the Armenia–Georgia highway. The ruined fortress of Kayan lies 4.24 kilometres west of Haghpat on the summit of a high mountain. To the east is the deep Sherek gorge with the Zhivankay River, while to the west lies the equally deep Debed gorge and the river of the same name. Today, Kayanberd is a popular destination valued for its historical importance and dramatic mountain views.
