Monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin

The monasteries of Haghpat and Sanahin are two major Armenian Apostolic complexes in Lori Province. Built during the era of the Kiurikian dynasty, founders of the Kingdom of Lori, between the 10th and 13th centuries, they served not only as places of worship but also as centres of learning and culture. Sanahin, for example, was renowned for its school of calligraphy.

Architecturally, both complexes are outstanding examples of medieval Armenian building traditions. Their plans and decoration reflect the region’s cultural wealth and the skill of its craftsmen. In recognition of their historical and architectural value, Haghpat and Sanahin were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
