Monument to Stepan Shahumyan

The Monument to Stepan Shahumyan was erected on Shahumyan Square in Yerevan in 1931. Created by sculptor Sergey Merkurov and architect Ivan Zholtovsky, it commemorates the revolutionary and political figure Stepan Shahumyan (1878–1918). It was the first monument officially installed in Yerevan and is listed among the historical and cultural monuments of the Kentron District. Standing in the northeastern part of the square against the boulevard, it plays an important role in the architectural ensemble. The Russian Orthodox Saint Nicholas Cathedral once occupied this site before being demolished in the 1920s.
