Sancaklar Mosque

Sancaklar Mosque in Büyükçekmece is remarkable for its underground architecture. The prayer hall lies seven metres below ground, without a traditional dome or minaret, and is defined by straight lines and textured grey stone. The main wall curves and disrupts conventional symmetry, while natural light entering from above creates a quiet, meditative atmosphere. Raw concrete, warm stone and wood are used throughout. Designed by Emre Arolat and completed in 2012, the mosque received international recognition from ArchDaily, RIBA and the Abdullatif Al Fozan Award. It is open to visitors daily outside the five prayer times.

The mosque’s architect was inspired by the Cave of Hira, where the Prophet Muhammad received the first verses of the Quran. This connection with an underground sanctuary led him to create a prayer space deep below the surface, filled with light and tranquillity.
