Garni Fortress stands on a rocky promontory above the Azat River gorge, where steep cliffs and water on two sides form a natural defence. Human builders completed it with walls, towers and a single narrow gateway. Built during the reign of King Tiridates, it became a summer residence of Armenian rulers. At its centre rises a colonnaded temple whose stone decoration combines Greek patterns with Armenian symbols such as pomegranates and grapevines. An earthquake destroyed the temple, but its original stones were later returned to their places. Garni still watches over the gorge as a solemn reminder of antiquity.

Ancient tradition says that Gegham founded Garni and named it after his grandson Garnik. The building was later associated with Mithra, the god of the sun and fire. According to legend, when Armenia adopted Christianity and pagan sanctuaries were destroyed, Garni was spared and converted into a “house of coolness,” a refuge from the summer heat. Another, quieter interpretation suggests that it may have been a royal mausoleum rather than a temple.
