Symphony of Stones

The Symphony of Stones, also known as the Basalt Organ, is a unique natural formation in the Azat River Gorge near Garni, Armenia. The cliff consists of massive, regularly shaped five- and six-sided basalt columns rising as high as 50 meters in dense vertical rows.

The landscape formed about 40 million years ago through volcanic activity. Lava flows cooled rapidly, crystallizing into the characteristic columnar structure. Similar geological formations occur elsewhere in the world, but Armenia's Basalt Organ is considered among the largest and most visually striking.

Scientists still debate aspects of the site's origin and whether any human involvement played a role. A small spring flows nearby, and lizards can often be seen among the rocks. A hiking trail leads to the 1st-century Temple of Garni. The Symphony of Stones is protected as a natural monument and included on UNESCO's list. It even appeared in Robert Sahakyants's Soviet animated film Wow, a Talking Fish!, reinforcing its magical image.
