Rio Cargo Ship at Cape Doob

The cargo ship Rio lies beached near Cape Doob and Kabardinka after being driven ashore by a storm on 12 December 2018. The crew survived unharmed, while the 146-metre vessel, rising 42 metres to the top of its masts, became a monument to the power of the sea. Tools, electronic equipment, a lifeboat and the flag of Togo remain aboard. Today Rio is an excursion destination where the storm’s impact is still visible in the metal hull.

Rio is gradually becoming an accidental work of abandoned art, its hull covered in graffiti like the walls of a forgotten city. Some visitors report strange noises, voices and even ghostly silhouettes along the quiet shore, as though the memory of the storm returns in the night mist.
