Monument to the Sailors of the Revolution

On the coastal highway between Novorossiysk and Gelendzhik stands a memorial shaped by a tragic decision. A twelve-metre granite sailor kneels with his cap held to his heart, a gesture of farewell and loyalty. His face shows restrained grief and determination. Across the road, a viewpoint contains a “sighting cube” resembling a sinking ship. Bronze arrows on the parapet point out to sea toward the places where ships of the Black Sea Fleet were scuttled in June 1918 rather than surrendered to the enemy. The monument preserves the memory of sailors who chose the loss of their vessels over dishonour.

The image of the memorial spread far beyond the coast on postcards, pennants, badges and postal envelopes. Some markers by the sea remain blank where the precise outlines of lost ships could not be reconstructed, reminding visitors that not every detail of the past has survived, even in stone and bronze.
