Saint Mesrop Mashtots Church

Saint Mesrop Mashtots Church is an Armenian Apostolic church in Oshakan, where Mesrop Mashtots, creator of the Armenian alphabet, is buried. It is one of Armenia’s best-known shrines and attracts many pilgrims. Every October, worshippers visit during the feast of the Holy Translators.

Mashtots was buried here in 440, and a martyrium was constructed three years later. The present church was built over his tomb between 1873 and 1879. Since 1996 it has served as the seat of the Diocese of Aragatsotn, further enhancing its religious and cultural importance.
