Admiral Serebryakov Embankment

Admiral Serebryakov Embankment is Novorossiysk’s main promenade, extending for almost 2.5 kilometres along Tsemes Bay. It links the city centre with the sea and shifts from formal memorial space to a lighter resort atmosphere. Landmarks include the museum cruiser Mikhail Kutuzov, the monument to the founders of Novorossiysk and the poignant Sailor’s Wife looking toward the horizon. Lighter sculptures include The Water Giver and Dolphin and Mermaid. By day the waterfront is filled with beaches, cafés and entertainment; after dark, lights and fountains rising from the sea transform the bay.

At the end of the promenade stands the austere Unknown Sailor monument, commemorating Black Sea sailors of the Civil War and Second World War. Farther on is a very different memorial dedicated to the Black Sea anchovy. A stone shoal of fish on a granite base honours the small species that saved the city from hunger in difficult times. Its inscription reads, “To the anchovy, from grateful residents of Novorossiysk.”
