Malaya Zemlya Memorial Complex

Malaya Zemlya in Novorossiysk is a memorial shaped by the actual front line. It honours soldiers who held a tiny bridgehead for 225 days and influenced the fate of the city. The composition resembles a landing ship: two intersecting beams rise above the bay, carrying tense faces of troops as if frozen just before an assault. Inside, the Gallery of Military Glory displays portraits of heroes and stone banners representing units that fought for Novorossiysk. Built in 1982, the monument preserves a memory of courage disproportionate to the small size of the ground defended.

War is visible here not only in exhibits: original trenches and dugouts still survive. Grass was brought from other places of military glory across the country. The memorial is therefore unusual both architecturally and as a museum where the battlefield has been preserved rather than reconstructed.
