Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Batumi was built by civil engineers I. P. Golenishchev and F. F. Lyubyanov. It was founded in 1888 with the participation of Emperor Alexander III and members of the imperial family. The cathedral served believers from the late 19th century until 1936, when it was destroyed during the atheistic campaign of the Soviet period. On the site of the destroyed cathedral, the "Intourist" hotel building was constructed according to the project of architect Shchusev, using the foundation of the original cathedral.
