Big Almaty Peak

Big Almaty Peak rises on the northern slope of the Trans-Ili Alatau, only fifteen kilometers from Almaty yet feeling far removed from the city. It forms a pyramid on a spur of the Almaty-Alagir massif, standing like a guardian over the mountains. The cold surface of Big Almaty Lake lies to the east, while the western slopes descend toward Prokhodnoye Gorge and the Prokhodnaya River. The ridge begins with scree and gradually turns into severe bare rock. The Tien Shan Astronomical Observatory clings to the high slopes, where mountains and stars seem especially close. From an altitude of 3,680 meters, the peak overlooks Prokhodnoy Pass and Tourist Peak. The mountain punishes carelessness: clear weather can turn into fog, wind, or snow within hours.

Rare life survives on the slopes. Mountain plants listed in Kazakhstan’s Red Book grow among the rocks and grasses, while snow leopards and ibex are occasionally seen in the silence. Until the 1950s, maps and panoramas of the Almaty mountains referred to the summit by a simple and accurate name: Pyramid.
