Guardsmen Peak

The peak in the Maloalmaty Gorge of Zailiysky Alatau, located in the Azutau mountains, is the highest point in the area, reaching an altitude of 4120 meters. It is connected to two other peaks: to the east with Karlytau via a snowy ridge and to the west with Uchitel peak and a pass of the same name. The southern slope of the peak is abundant with steep rock formations, couloirs, and scree, while the northern slope is covered with snow and ice, facing the Bogdanovich glacier. The western and eastern slopes of the peak are gentler and in places lack glaciers. In Soviet times, the summit of the Heroes of Panfilovtsy peak hosted training sessions and competitions for climbers. The peak was first conquered in 1942 by a group of cadets from the All-Union Mountain Training School under the leadership of Master of Sports Alexey Maleinov. Its name was given in honor of the 28 Panfilov Guardsmen.
