Goshavank, also known as Nor Getik, stands on a plateau near the confluence of the Aghstev and Getik rivers in Armenia's Tavush Province. Founded in 1188 on the site of the earthquake-destroyed Getik Monastery, it was first called New Getik and was renamed Goshavank after the death of Mkhitar Gosh in 1213. In the 13th century, the monastery served not only as a spiritual center but also as a place of learning, with a seminary described by contemporaries as a university. Its buildings follow a restrained Armenian style: cross-domed churches, a library-bell tower with manuscript niches, and delicate late-13th-century khachkars carved by Master Poghos like stone lace. Although Goshavank is no longer an active religious center, its walls preserve history, culture, and a rich legacy of ancient manuscripts. It was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000.

A legend about Goshavank tells of Mkhitar Gosh. The Lord appeared to him in a dream and foretold seven years of abundance followed by seven years of drought. Mkhitar built granaries and filled them with grain. When famine came, he distributed bread and saved the people from death. For this he received the name Gosh, and the monastery was named Goshavank in honor of its wise protector.
