Holy Mother of God Church

Surb Astvatsatsin, the Church of the Holy Mother of God, is an active Armenian Apostolic church in Yerevan’s Kanaker district. It was built in 1695 after an earlier church was damaged in the earthquake of 1679. Construction was funded by donations from local residents. The church once belonged to a monastic congregation and had monks’ quarters and other buildings enclosed by a wall. An inscription on the church records its history and importance to the local community.
