Kashveti Church

Kashveti Church, also known as the Church of St. George, is an Orthodox church located in the center of Tbilisi, opposite the Parliament of Georgia building on Rustaveli Avenue. The church was built between 1904 and 1910 according to the design of the famous Tiflis architect Leopold Bilfeld, who was inspired by the medieval cathedral of Samtavisi. The church was erected on the site of an old brick church built by order of the Amilakhvari family in 1753, which had fallen into disrepair over time.

The name "Kashveti" comes from the Georgian words "kva" (stone) and "shva" (to give birth), symbolizing the birth of faith from stone. The building was damaged during the fighting between Gamsakhurdia's National Guard and opposition forces between December 1991 and January 1992.
