Palace of Bukoleon

The imperial palace, located on the shore of the Sea of Marmara in the Constantinople district, was built in honor of the Persian prince Hormizd. The building was situated on an artificial terrace near the pier and had a bronze roof, as well as balconies overlooking the sea. A distinctive architectural feature was the balcony on the southern facade, which stood out among other elements. A marble staircase led to the building, adorned with statues of lions, as well as two statues at the level of the main facade's arcades. Columns with marble capitals were decorated with images of a lion and a bull. Marble and precious metals were used in the interior. The palace's name originated from a marble sculpture depicting a fighting lion and bull.
