Alaverdi Monastery

The Monastery and Cathedral of Saint George, also known as Alaverdi Cathedral, was built in the first quarter of the 11th century and is considered one of the four great cathedrals of Georgia. It is located near the village of the same name in the picturesque Alazani Valley, in the Akhmeta municipality of the Kakheti region of Georgia. The height of the cathedral is about 50 meters, and the interior space reaches over 42 meters. For almost a thousand years, Alaverdi Cathedral was the tallest church in Georgia until the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi was built. Although it is inferior in size to Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, Alaverdi Cathedral still holds special significance as the cathedral of the Alaverdi Diocese. The Georgian authorities have nominated it for inclusion in the World Heritage List.
