Ancient City of Tigranakert

Tigranakert is an ancient Armenian city that was located in the Agdam district of Azerbaijan. It was part of the Artsakh province of Greater Armenia, and then in the 4th century became part of Caucasian Albania. The city was one of four cities with this name in Greater Armenia, presumably founded by Tigranes II in the 1st century BC and named in his honor. Mentions of Tigranakert can be found in the work of the 7th-century Armenian historian Sebeos, as well as possibly in the works of Movses Kaghankatvatsi. Armenian archaeologists believe that the ruins discovered in 2005 in the settlement of Shakhbulag in Mountainous Karabakh, northwest of Agdam, belong to ancient Tigranakert. At this site, burial mounds, stone sculptures, and rock-hewn cult structures, including Christian churches, have been preserved. A report on this discovery was published in the academic journal of the International Association of Armenian Studies.
