Church of Saint Gregory the Illuminator

The Church of Saint Gregory the Illuminator, also known as the Church of the Dzor District, was built in Gyumri between 1870 and 1880 with donations from residents of the city’s Dzor neighbourhood. It had a three-aisled, centrally domed design and a small bell tower. Local people farmed and raised livestock around the church, which became closely associated with the district.

During the Soviet period, the dome was removed and the building was used as a warehouse. The 1988 Spitak earthquake severely damaged, though did not completely destroy, the church. Additional supports prevented further collapse, but the building remains unrestored.
