Hazrat Jabil Mosque

After the discovery of frescoes from the Paleologos period on the southern facade of the church in 1956, depicting Archangel Michael and the holy healers Cosmas and Damian, researchers were able to identify it as a church dedicated to these saints. In 1512, the church was converted into a mosque and rebuilt. The name "Church of Cosmas and Damian" was changed to "Hazreti Jabir Mosque" in honor of an Arab warrior buried in the southeast corner of the building. This warrior, Hazreti Jabir, died during the siege of Constantinople in 678.
