Historical settlement of Saro

Saro is an ancient village located in the picturesque gorge of the Mtkvari River, at an altitude of 1480 meters above sea level. It is situated in the Khizabavari community, within the Aspindza municipality, in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of southern Georgia. Basalt and andesite are mined around the village, indicating the rich natural resources of this area. Saro and its surroundings held strategic and economic importance since ancient times. A unique fortress complex has been preserved on the territory of the village, which is a testament to the rich history of this place. Each fortress within this complex was a complex and independent fortified structure, reflecting the importance and power of this region.
