Amaras Church

Amaras Monastery is an ancient Armenian monastery founded in the 4th century by the first Catholicos of Armenia. In the 5th century, the first Armenian school was opened here by Mesrop Mashtots. Later, the monastery became the residence of the Catholicos of the Albanian Church. It was a renowned religious and cultural center of medieval Armenia, located in the province of Myus Aband and historical Artsakh. Amaras was under the jurisdiction of the Armenian Apostolic Church and until 2023 was under the control of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.
