Metekhi Church

Metekhi Church, also known as the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, is one of the most famous churches in Tbilisi, Georgia. It is located on a cliff overlooking the Kura River in the Metekhi district. The church was built in honor of the Dormition of the Mother of God and is an important pilgrimage site for Orthodox Christians.

In 1795, the church was destroyed during the Persian pogrom of the city, and the temple icon was lost. However, King George XIII restored the church after this event. In the following years, the church became the subject of disputes and conflicts, including a hunger strike organized by Zviad Gamsakhurdia, demanding the return of the church to the Georgian Church.

Ultimately, in 1988, the church was returned to believers and has since become an important symbol of faith and history of Georgia. Its beautiful architecture and historical significance make it one of Tbilisi's main tourist attractions.
