Istanbul Modern became Turkey’s first private museum devoted to modern and contemporary art. The idea emerged in 1987 after the First International Contemporary Art Exhibition, and the permanent collection initially opened in a two-storey port warehouse in Karaköy. In 2023, the museum moved into its own building at Galataport designed by Renzo Piano. The permanent collection traces the history of modern Turkish art and brings together local and international artists in media ranging from painting to complex installations and digital projects. Works are arranged both chronologically and thematically, including landscapes, self-portraits and abstract compositions. Separate galleries focus on major artists, while explanatory labels discuss the ideas and creation of each work. The museum hosts biennials and temporary exhibitions and also contains a gift shop, free library, cinema and panoramic restaurant, offering a broad immersion in contemporary art.

Only amateur photography without flash or tripod is permitted in the galleries, and video recording is prohibited. Visitors can access the roof, where a water surface mirrors Istanbul’s buildings and seems to merge with the Bosphorus, turning the view into a living cityscape.
