Mihrimah Sultan Mosque

The Mihrimah Mosque in Uskudar is one of the most famous landmarks in the area. Its second name, Iskele Camii, comes from its location next to the ferry pier. It is the first of two mosque complexes built by order of Mihrimah Sultan, daughter of Sultan Suleiman I and Hurrem Sultan. The mosque was designed by Mimar Sinan and built between 1546 and 1548. Its architecture reflects several characteristic features of Sinan's style, with high vaulted bases, slender minarets, and a main dome surrounded by semi-domes. Contemporaries described the mosque as "a woman in skirts spreading across the land."
